Lansing Community College
Electric Vehicle Project

bullet

5-22-08  I joined the Michigan Electric Vehicle Association.  I originally planned to convert a Saturn SL-1, but currently have a VW Golf, but I’m afraid it’s not going to be a good conversion, so I am selling it and hoping to find a Chevy S-10 with a good manual transmission and a bad engine.  I built a solar powered electric lawn mower, and I may be assisting a gentleman from Ann Arbor with his X-prize project, but it’s likely someone from this site will be of more assistance than myself:  http://michiganeaa.org/

I’ve spoken with so many students about this project now, and there is a great deal of interest in a class like this.  There are colleges and high schools across the country that have conversion programs, and I see no reason for LCC not to have one.

5-6-07  Thanks to Jack Miller and Mitch Dumond, the go-kart will be up and running by the end of the week…as long as the batteries I ordered show up.

bullet

4-25    We now have a car that we can potentially convert.  There are some issues with the title, but it’s available for us to use.  From May 11 through the end of June, the project will be expanded to 7 days a week from 5-9 pm in order to allow more people the chance to work on the car.

4-23    Last week I met a gentleman that may prove to be a big help. He's a machinist and an all-around handyman who restores classic autos. There is a non-working Renault LeCar "Lectric Leapard" that he may let me work on next month.

bullet

3-28    Here is my address.  Mapquest it.  It's a blue house.  I will be in my garage from 6-9pm every Thursday. It's not the LCC Autolab, but I bet they don't have a Wii.        518 E Willard Ave, Lansing MI 48910

bullet

3-24    We had our first meeting on thursday and it went very well.  John Miller, Mitchell Dumond, Tim Williams, Glenn Voisin, Travis Therrian, and myself were in attendance.  We removed the motor from the Go-Kart and started strategizing where our new components will go.  Thanks to Tim for the GoKart and Glenn for bringing all the wiring we'll need.  We have come up with a few things that need to be done, and a few parts we are going to need:

bullet

1. de-grease chassis

bullet

2. clean and repair/replace brakes

bullet

3. clean axle bearings

bullet

4. lubricate moving parts

bullet

5. find new motor (the one I picked out will not fit properly) 6. come up with a pedal system rather than a throttle for acceleration (I may have found one already) 7. we will need someone to weld two battery compartments on it.

bullet

8. circuit breaker/fuse setup.

bullet

9. find out if we should use the batteries in room 164 or purchase our own.

bullet

10.  when we get the batteries, we'll need to decide how to fit the wires to the terminals.

bullet

3-23    Received the “big check” from the LCC Foundation.  Cash donation instructions to follow soon.

3-15    Sean visited the MSU solar/electric car team.  They have a solar car they are working on and a GM EV-1 they are trying to restore.  Here's the link: http://www.egr.msu.edu/solar/   Their president, Arthur Matteson also offered to give us a few pointers for our project.  Here's his website:  http://mywebpages.comcast.net/awmatt/
