3000 U.S. Death Commemoration and Vigil for Peace

Dear Lansing Friends of Peace,

We are rapidly approaching the 3000 U.S. military death in Iraq in addition to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis.  As this tragedy continues and our President calls for more troops we urge you to join us and people in cities all over the country in mourning these deaths and calling for and end to this war.

On the day that the 3000 death is announced on the morning news we will hold a candle light vigil from 5:00pm to 6:00pm at the corner of Grand River and Abbott in East Lansing.  We will also read the names of the Michigan soldiers who have died in this conflict.

Please listen to the news, watch this list serve and join this vigil.  We will attempt to send a short e-mail that day to everyone on the GLNAWI list.  If we want the death and destruction to end we need to make this a priority. If our leaders are not yet listening, we need to speak louder - to them and to all citizens.

For additional opportunities to participate in peace activities check the Greater Lansing Area Network Against War and Injustice (GLNAWI) website at www.glnawi.org

Envisioning -- and Creating -- a Bright 2007
Amidst all the fear and fear-based thinking in the world today -- there are many bright signs of hope and possibility.  The light is always shining.  I'm thankful for all my teachers that have reminded me to follow the joy, find the bliss, feel good, appreciate more, stay present, learn from the pain, and remember to "be the change I wish to see."

bulletMagdalena's Teahouse
My "housemate" Nancy Brandon and her business partners Miko Fossom and Chris Dorman are doing some cool things at MTH.  Visit www.magdalenasteahouse.com or come down for an open mic on Weds evenings.  I'm trying to get a regular recording/broadcasting session going which will hopefully pilot in February on the 2nd Monday.  MTH will be changing in the new year -- streamlining its food menu, building its catering and meeting room facilities, and expanding its seating.  This is largely a volunteer-run music and art space. Contact Miko or Nancy for more info at 517-487-1822 or nanbran48823@msu.edu .

bulletWalkable and Bikable Communities
Some of the work I'm doing with Moving Our Community Toward Health (the regional healthy community initiative mentioned above) relates to this topic.  We've started a group called Tri-County Complete Streets to build a stronger local voice for these issues.  Visit www.re-news.net/mocth and click the link on the left for more info.

Terry Link is helping to facilitate a "Local First" initiative in the region.  A meeting will be held in January to help rekindle this important effort.  Send him an e-mail if you'd like to get involved at link@msu.edu

bulletUltimate Frisbee
I've rediscovered the joys of this sport and hope to play weekly.  Let me know if you're interested.  Weather permitting, there are currently games planned for Friday and Sunday afternoons near MSU's I.M. East and the Vet School.  See an interactive map of campus at www.spartylive.com.  The fields are between Hagadorn and Bogue, just north and just south of Wilson.

Say "YES!" to Local

I just picked up the latest "Yes!" Magazine at ELFCO and there are several excellent articles by the likes of Winona Laduke, Frances Moore Lappế, and Judy Wicks  Click here...

(It's a little ironic that the electric guitar in one of the articles is imported from China 8-)

bulletTime to Recycle "Recycled Electrons?"
It's been almost two months since the last Recycled Electrons.  I'm realizing the once-a-month format may not work for me, given reality.  I've been focusing more energy on a weekly healthy community update, which features some of the material I might normally include here (let me know if you'd like to subscribe to this).  Also, a lot more interest groups, blogs, listservs, etc. have sprung up in the last six years.  It's easier to find cool stuff on the Internet now.  So... I may move to a different format, frequency, etc.  I'm open to suggestions : - )

Thanks,

LeRoy
