Complete Streets: Why Not Lansing?
- Lyndon Babcock lyndonrb@comcast.net
I had been following efforts in Illinois to require "complete streets" at the state level. To my surprise, SB314 passed the Illinois Senate and House in August 2007. But elation turned to one more bicycle disappointment when the Illinois governor emasculated the bill by using his amendatory veto to change all the words, "shall" to "may".
Since then, I had mostly forgotten about Illinois SB314 and have been well-occupied with bicycle activities in Lansing and Michigan.
However, our enlightening meeting with Mayor Bernero on February 21 led me to plan to present the SB314 story at a future Task Force meeting. Disappointment became belated elation as I discovered that the veto had been overridden last October.
Illinois YES! Why not Lansing and Michigan? Read all about it!
