Help Identify Healthy Community Coalitions
Please help us put together a list of coalitions or collaborative initiatives in the Ingham County area involved with "healthy communities." This can include health related topics as well (violence prevention, tobacco cessation, smart growth, etc.)Please send the coalition name, community (or region), contact person, and contact info. to leroy@leroyharvey.net or jsinno@ingham.org. This is part of an effort to connect with healthy community coalitions around the state.

Two Events Support Mental Health

Please see below for information about two upcoming events, one sponsored by the Mental Health Partnership Council of the Capital Area Health Alliance and the other by CEI Community Mental Health.1st Event: CMHA-CEI and NAMI of Lansing will feature the movie "Canvas" on February 24th and February 25th at the Hannah Community Center Auditorium. Times and details are on the attached flyer. A story of a family whose wife/mother has Schizophrenia, the film is based on a true story. A short panel discussion will follow the film. Click here.
2nd Event: The Community Mental Health Authority of Clinton-Eaton-Ingham Counties Annual Report Meeting will host a "Community Education Event" on March 6th at the Lansing Center. Joseph Greco, the writer and Film Director of the movie "Canvas" will be the keynote speaker. Joe is an inspirational speaker; details for the event are attached here.

The Farmers' Market Effect
Research shows that if allowed to use vouchers at farmers' markets, the consumption of fruits and vegetables in the diets of low-income families does rise. While the research can't exactly tell why this happens, women shoppers noted that they liked the freshness of the produce at the farmers' markets and like the feel of community there.

February 20 Landscaping with Native Plants
Wild One's February meeting is Wednesday the 20th, 7:00 pm, in Room 139 of the Radiology Building on Service Road, west of Hagadorn (click for map).Our speaker is Vern Stephens who operates Designs by Nature, a native plant landscape and consulting business on 40 acres in Laingsburg. He collects and propagates native Michigan seeds of wildflowers and grasses. He will talk about "Landscaping with Native Plants", the selection and siting of forbs, grasses, and shrubs for the home landscape.
Refreshments will be served. Feel free to share this information with friends or plant enthusiasts you may know. All are welcome to attend; membership is not required.

February 23 I ♥ My Neighborhood Fair
Please join us for the I ♥ MY NEIGHBORHOOD Fair! at the Foster Community Center.People all over the Eastside are discovering new ways to celebrate and improve our vibrant community! To learn more about how you can make a difference where you live, join us at Allen Neighborhood Center's I ♥ My Neighborhood Fair on Saturday, February 23, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Foster Community Center.
Visit anytime between 10 am and 2 pm, and check out the many informational tables; learn how to organize and plan fun activities, deal with concerns on your street, beautify your street, etc. Meet others who have experience in neighborhood work to discuss your ideas or experience.
Remember: there are many different ways to be active in your neighborhood. Come learn about new ways to get to know your neighbors and build friendship and fellowship on your street.
Come by yourself, or better yet, make it an outing with your neighbors. If you have any questions, please call 367-2468 and ask for Sarah or Leslie.

This lively, fun and informative event will feature Dr. Margaret Aguwa as our guest speaker. Dr. Aguwa, MSU Professor of Family and Community Medicine, an osteopathic physician, and expert on breast cancer is known for her tireless efforts to empower, advocate for, and serve minority and non-traditional groups. Discussions of the book will be taking place in all14 branches and will be featured in area bookstores. As a culminating event, a panel of three presenters have been invited to discuss topics ranging from overview of global warming (Steve Curwood, author and host of the NPR program Living on Earth); to an idea of what a community can do ( David Konkle, Energy Coordinator for the City of Ann Arbor); to a very personal account of living sustainably (author Judith Levine, Not Buying It: My Year Without Shopping).
