The Greening of Greater Lansing
- Katie Olender, Joan Nelson, Hollie Hamel, and Friends

Quality Dairy Stores at Pine and Saginaw or Jolly and Dunkel  are offering more than fresh coffee and donuts.  You'll find some of these luscious, local, luxuries...

  • Yellow Summer Squash
  • Green Beans
  • Blueberries
  • Lettuce
  • Cabbage
  • Beets, with the greens attached
  • Red potatoes

* * *

And Allen Street Farmers Market at Kalamazoo and Allen St. features more than fresh, local food -- you'll see all your friends there and find food for thought....

ANC's guest organization last week was Gateway Community Services.    You will continue to find the ANC Outreach Team promoting breast health with samples of delicious cancer-fighting foods, ANC Program info, the Food Chatter Table, and the Kid's Table.

We see by so many of your familiar faces that you are making Wednesday at the Market a regular part of your week and we appreciate that!  We are so pleased to support 11 growers this year and they offer an amazing and complete array of fruits and vegetables. AppleShram Orchard, Grams Farms, Nodding Thistle, Giving Tree Farm, Felzke Farms, Green Eagle Farm, Wildflower Farm, Clark Sugarbush, The Vangs (2), and Dou D. Thao all gather on the Eastside to offer us a huge variety of greens, carrots, peas, beans, cherries, rhubarb, flowers, multiple herbs, tomatoes, zucchini, summer squash, cucumbers, beets, kohlrabi, onions, radishes, chicken sausage, eggs, honey and honeycomb, maple syrup & butter & cream, potted plants, herbs and more, apple butter, jams, applesauce, and MORE foods appear every week as our Michigan season progresses.

We are also so very fortunate to have Alice's Kitchen, the East Lansing Food Coop, Kimi Danford, Great Harvest Bread Company,  Soulful Earth Herbals, Kathie Kuhn's Creations, Green River Cafe, Gone Wired Cafe, Ofilia Bakery and Deli, and the Glass Act supplying a mind-boggling selection of baked goods, prepared foods, wholesome dried goods, fresh breads, pies, pastries and sweets, fish, pork, sausages, herbals soaps, body products, natural bug spray, sun block, amazing dessert sauces plus more!

Whew!  When you've strolled through all of that, head over to the Cafe to sit, rest, drink water, and view the prototypes of a possible market mural to be placed on the side of the building this fall.  Express you ideas, opinions, and suggestions!

Lake Lansing Park Update
- Leslie Kuhn

For 20 years many of us have enjoyed walking or skiing on the southern trails of Lake Lansing Park North, through beautiful woods and wetlands full of wildlife and birds.  What is little known is that a portion of the Lake Lansing North Park trail system is actually on 120 acres of land that are owned by a housing developer who has graciously allowed us to access these trails for the past 22 years.  Last year, it became a major issue in Meridian Township when the developer proposed a development of 151 houses on this land. Zoning hearings on the development attracted dozens of citizen speakers and even more letters. The Township Planning Commission recommended against rezoning, and the developer never presented its case to the Board of Trustees for final ruling.

Now the community is excited in a good way, because HDI has indicated interest in selling the land to Ingham County to add these beautiful woods and trails to the park! Our goal is to preserve for future generations this area with paths through oak and pine forests, and increase the park's size by thirty percent!

At the www.preservelakelansingtrails.org website, you'll find lots of info about the land and those who have donated.  Considerable support from Meridian Township and Ingham County towards a DNR Natural Resources Trust Fund application is contingent on our raising $150K from individuals, businesses, and charitable organizations by this fall.  We need your help to succeed!  Significant donors will be honored by being named on the website, in the Towne Courier, and on a permanent sign in Lake Lansing North Park.

Feel free to pass this info along to your business/workplace and friends who might be interested in contributing or volunteering (e.g., speaking to groups/clubs/neighbors).  Look for an article in the Towne Courier!  We are also receiving considerable coverage from the Lansing State Journal, WILS-AM1320, WKAR-Radio, WILX-TV, and WLNS-TV.

Hope you will consider donating generously!

 Happy trails,

- Leslie Kuhn, on behalf of the Preserve Lake Lansing Trails steering committee (Cathy Benson, Dave Card, Shawn Grady, Noreen Harty, Doug Jung, Curt Munson, Steve Schmidt, Helen Tanner, and Tom Valli)

Tool for Trail Development
- Lisa Grost

Many of you are working on trail development and I wanted to share this new resource with you.  Although we have our own evaluation program, it's a great tool to assist with the development of a new trail.  www.prevent.org/actionguides/CommunityTrail.pdf

More about the community calendar....

Get the Word Out -- and avoid scheduling conflicts.

You asked for one.  You got it!    An easy-to-use community calendar!

See a current calendar I've created for our Healthy Community Network which combines calendars from 6 groups.

* Why Free?  It seems too good to be true!

It's not only free, but you don't have to look at ads either!  Okemos resident, Warren Armstrong developed the calendar to help musicians.  The calendar is currently run by a group of performers and venue owners tired of the inefficiencies and poor results of current web and print coverage of events.

But it seems like more work!"

Response:  This doesn't have to take any more time than what you already spend if you do a calendar.  In fact, the handy form/fields make it easier to use than most I've tried.  In addition, you'll save time contacting others, promoting your events, and getting events posted in other's calendars.

Ready?  Have your "calendar person" contact me at 505-2809 or leroy@leroyharvey.net and provide a couple short tips to get you started.
