Lunch Forum on Infrastructure May 20
Michigan’s Infrastructure at Risk? Tuesday, May 20, 11:30 to 1:30 p.m.The upcoming forum, Maintaining Michigan’s Infrastructure, is open for registration of anyone concerned about the upkeep and sustainability of roads, bridges, water, and power systems within our state. The May 20 luncheon forum comes just weeks after national news reports on a giant sinkhole at least 260-foot-deep and three football fields wide over just two days in Daisetta, Texas. Michigan citizens, like those across the country, are concerned about maintaining the state’s critical infrastructure since similar events continue to occur across the country. Speakers include Jan Beecher, Director of MSU’s Institute for Public Utilities, and Ken Boyer, Transportation Economist at Michigan State University. Held in downtown Lansing, this forum will offer an assessment of Michigan’s infrastructure and best-practice recommendations for sustainability. Click here to learn more about the 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. forum….
To register now: Click here or call (517) 355-6672. There is no cost to attend. A light lunch will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Location: Downtown Lansing, across from the Capitol Building at the Anderson House Office Building, Mackinac Room (fifth floor). Directions: More information including directions may be found at www.ippsr.msu.edu.
Faith-Based Initiative on Housing Issues: Monday evening, May 19th
-Valerie Hart
Action of Greater Lansing is having its annual Nehemiah Action Assembly on Monday evening, May 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Union Missionary Baptist Church. (same place as last year -- 500 S. MLK Jr. Blvd.) We're on a big push to reach our goal of 600 this year and we'll really need it to show our 'people power.' (last year we had a little over 400) There will be good music & dance, lots of cool people, but most importantly we'll be looking for a commitment from Mayor Bernero to address the 3 people every day who are being evicted from their rental properties in 24 hours due to code violations in Lansing (the red tags). We're also looking for more accountability for irresponsible landlords who are putting people into this situation. So, specifically, one of the things that we're looking at is a publicly accessible website on all of the registered rental properties in Lansing so that we can better police ourselves as a community (for example you would be able to see what the code compliance office is doing with the red tag property next door to you or would be able to check a property and its landlord before renting a property). This is just one of the things that we'll be asking for on Monday night.
