Recycling Saves Resources

According to Granger, Meridian Township offices have recycled 3570 lbs. of paper since April saving:

  • 30 trees
  • 7318 kWh of electricity
  • 107 lbs of air pollution
  • 12,495 gallons of water
  • 5.94 cubic yards of landfill space

This does not include all the other waste reduction efforts that have occurred as well -- copying on 2 sides, NOT printing paper when you don't have to, turning off lights, ridesharing, etc.

Tips and Questions

Question:  Can I recycle goldenrod/brown envelopes with mixed paper?
Answer:
It depends.  Here are a few options...

Best:  Re-use envelopes by putting a label over the address(es).

Business Paper Recycling Service: Keep separate from the higher grade "office paper" and put with "mixed paper."

Curbside:  OK to put with all paper (magazines, newspaper, junk mail, etc.).  Place neatly in a brown paper grocery bag or stack neatly in bottom of tub.

Meridian Recycling Center:  Place with mixed paper and magazines.

Trash Can:  While this may not be the best option, ecologically speaking, the good news is that some of it may eventually turn in to methane, some of which will be captured to produce electricity.  See pictures of a recent field trip to Granger's facilities here.
