Recycling Update
July, 2008
Volunteers Still Needed for Recycling Events
Are you interested in 2 hours of clean, green, healthy fun? Join other recyclers in our region unloading, sorting, directing traffic, etc. on July 15 and/or 19th. The first event is at VanAtta's from 2pm - 7pm for plastic plant containers (call Cara at 989-224-5187). The second is on July 19th - behind AMC Theatres - for clothing, shoes, foam, glass, etc.). Call Barbara at 337-1705 and pick a shift that works for you.
Celebrate Energy Independence Day
What holiday is better than the Fourth of July to reduce our dependence on non-renewable fossil fuels. The U.S. imports 65% of its oil... making oil the number one contributor to our trade deficit. Michigan imports over 90% of the oil used here! There are hundreds of enjoyable ways to free yourself from an oil addiction. You can probably think of a few on your own, but if you need help, you can see what the Alliance to Save Energy has to say if you click here.
Have A Green Fourth of July
There are lots of ways to make your 4th of July weekend clean and green. Enjoy yourself and help the planet too! Here are a few ideas to get you fired up...
- How to have a green fourth of July party
- A Greener Independence Day
- See how a Michigan Festival is Going Green (Rothbury this weekend)
- Walk, bike, or share a ride to Meridian Fireworks (including food and music)

Recycling is a Team Effort
Collaboration is a key to recycling. If you read the Green Star article last month, you saw how local businesses work with their customers and each other to make waste reduction happen. At Curves, for example, members help by taking recyclables home with them or to a local drop off center. At the YMCA, Granger takes sorted recyclables with the cardboard. At Meridian Township, employees have offered to transport materials not taken through the office paper recycling program. Employees and customers are often the best source of ideas and action in any successful waste reduction effort. Thank YOU for caring.
If you have recycling and/or green tips to share in a future update, please let me know!
Thanks,
LeRoy
