The Marsh Pointe Recycling Story
-by Joyce Benvenuto

Marsh Pointe, in Haslett, is senior living at its best for those 55 and older. Their flier gives 101 reasons why one would call and schedule a rental tour. Number 54 on the list is door-to-door recycling and trash removal.

This door-to-door recycling is made possible by an on-site volunteer recycling committee headed by James Hayes who has been living at Marsh Pointe for five years. Each Tues morning at 7:30, his three person committee walks the halls and picks up the recycling bags set out by residents. They even have little collection carts. In addition, a backup group of about five people is always ready to cover absences. According to Hayes, residents are very good about sorting and cleaning all the containers. This makes the committee’s job easy as they collect the plastic milk jugs, clear glass, tin cans and newspaper. They then take it out back to the trash area behind a concrete wall where Granger has supplied a recycling dumpster plus a bin for the newspapers. So far, about 2/3 of the residents are participating in this program, a good response.

Marsh Pointe makes all communication easy with a general monthly newsletter and a monthly meeting. The main office itself does it part by recutting paper and using it for notes instead of sticky pads according to Charlotte......, manager, "We try to waste nothing." Marsh Pointe continues to be a gem of Meridian Township and enjoys the support of the Ingham County Federation of Woman’s Clubs.
