R2C2 Meeting Minutes

  • Spring collection events:
    • Promotion, planning of collection events
      • The vision for an advertising campaign was discussed.  Specifically, a full page ad in the What’s On section promoting all three collections along with information on other community events.  Kevin will work on getting sponsorship.  Discussion also focused on individual R2C2 organizations ability to provide funding as well as the equitability of such funding.  The group resolved to seek outside sponsorship to fund the campaign.

 

    • Collection details/flyer finalization
      • Book Collection - Dave will work with Granger on boxboard requirements for the book collection and forward that information to Lori who will work on the flyer.  Lori will send library group letters out by early February.
      • Document Destruction Day – Kevin will complete and forward to R2C2 group via e-mail.  Flyer will include information on record retention.

 

    • E-Waste vendor update
      • RFP for electronics is due February 15.

 

  • Formalizing R2C2
      • Applying for 501C3 status
        • Cara will write up summary.  Each R2C2 member will take it back to their supervisor/board for approval.

 

  • Spring Home and Garden show – exhibit opportunities/staffing booth
    • March 13-16.  City of Lansing will have a booth and need staff and community recycling information.  Several members pledged to help out.  Batteries, shoes, cell phones and books will be collected for recycling.

 

  • Regional Pharmaceutical collection Event
    • An EPA grant is available to develop a collection event.  Discussion focused on the location of a collection.  Cara will provide previous grant information.
    • Members discussed their interest level/ability to participate in the program.  Some members will not participate.  Martha will move forward with developing program/grant writing.

 

  • March 19th Library event –
    • Al Gore, Inconvenient Truth showing.  Martha sent information to members for possible posting on web sites or other promotion.

 

  • The Garbage Revolution
    • The possibility of conducting a fundraiser at a local cinema, possibly with MidMEAC, was discussed.  It would promote recycling and environmentalism.  America Recycles Day was talked about as a possible date.  Cara will look into purchasing the movie.

 

  • Regional collection of agricultural plastics
    • Meeting scheduled for January 24 at Van Attas.  Dave, Cara and Martha will attend.

 

  • Rain barrel/compost bin sale
    • Vendor
      • Dave discussed the Rain Barrel USA rain barrel and distributed information.  He indicated that the company could handle ordering and payments through their Pay Pal program.
      • Dave has a sample Rain Barrel and will provide it for the Home and Garden Show.
      • A tentative date was set for May 21 with a distribution time of 3:30 to 7:30.  Dunhams parking lot and Clark Corners were discussed.
      • Marketing will be done by each member.
      • Cara will look into a vendor for compost bins to do a joint sale.

 

    • Sell at Home Show?
      • Not feasible to sell at the Home show, but could provide information on how to order through Rain Barrel.

 

  • Green Map
    • No new update

 

  • Thrift Crawl
    • Martha distributed a list of thrift stores at the meeting and asked members to review it.  Martha will visit stores to verify that they should be on the list.  She will develop punch card and give-away promotion.  Promote 4-6 weeks prior to the start.

 

  • Community Updates
    • East Lansing – Dave assisted Meridian Township with their interview process for their Recycling Coordinator position.  Assisting the City of Grand Ledge develop a “Project Pride” type collection and improving participation in their drop off recycling program.

 

    • Eaton County – Lisa is moving forward with Comcast marketing.  She has requested staffing for a part time administrative assistant.  Indicated that Charlotte and Mulliken are accepting all colored glass and sending it to ERI in Grand Rapids.

 

    • Ingham County – The sharps collection will now take place at the Clean Sweeps site.  They will be printing more Cleaner Choices.

 

    • Lansing – Now accepting boxboard commingled with cardboard at drop off site.

 

    • Clinton County – Cara is grateful that Dave is doing minutes.
