August 2, 2009

Vicki Shafarman’s Home
I. Welcome & roll call - Pres. Hunt called the meeting to order at 6:08 p.m.
A. Board members present: Terry Hunt, Bruce Veltema, Vicki Shafarman, Doris Siegmann, Sandra Amundsen, Maggie Schuesler
B. Board members absent: none
C. Others present: Mary Szlachetka
II. Agenda was approved with no additional items.
III. Minutes of the May 3, 2009 Board meeting were approved as written. Shafarman moved. Veltema seconded.
IV. Communications from SEMCA residents and others
A. Hunt received an e-mail, via Schuesler, from Dave Thomas at 334 N. Hagadorn. He was concerned about a neighbor who was reluctant to call the police regarding loud parties at a rental directly next door. Hunt communicated with Mayor Loomis, who offered some suggestions, but no solution. Renters have since moved.
B. Hunt also had a communication from Mike Polzin, 1800 block of Melrose, regarding his concern about a possible rental.
V. President’s Report - Terry Hunt
Hunt attended the Neighborhood Assoc. President’s meeting in June.
1. Ordinance 1212 was discussed. The Housing Comm. will have a report for the Oct. 20th City Council’s meeting.
2. The city’s budget is still in question as the state’s revenue sharing will be reduced.
VI. Financial Report - Vicki Shafarman
A. Balance on hand is $1,246.43. No disbursements.
B. Shafarman will check on Board members’ current dues payments.
VII. Committee/Representative’s Report
A. Newsletter
1. Articles will include: announcement & agenda for fall, Oct. 11 membership meeting, park update – Ogilvie/Shafarman, appreciation for SEMCare’s grocery shopping drivers and CATA transportation - Kales.
2. Due date for articles is Sept. 7. E-mail or give to Kales.
B. Newsletter delivery - Doris Siegmann
1. Newsletter should be delivered the weekend of Sept. 26/27.
2. Volunteers are always needed to help deliver.
C. HHP (Hometown Housing Partnership) - Mary Szlachetka
There was an early spring meeting that potential home buyers were encouraged to attend where information about funding for down payments and home improvements was available.
D. SEMCares - Vicki Shafarman
The park fundraiser made $1,600. There will be another fundraiser in the future.
E. Park - Vicki Shafarman for Ginger Ogilvie
1. New paths, sand and climbing rocks have been installed.
2. Names for the park were suggested. Hidden River, Pine Tree, Mt. Moor, Friendship, Moor/Vernon, Vern/Moor, Whispering Pine.
3. The list of names will be on the reverse side of the picnic flyer. Residents will be asked to choose their favorite, with space provided to write in other suggestions. These forms/ballots will be turned in at the picnic on Sept. 13 or given to Pres. Hunt. The new park name will be announced at the Oct. membership meeting.
F. Outreach/publicity
1. Hunt will ask his contact to provide a list of new residents moving into the SEMCA neighborhood.
2. Szlachetka will get the names of the new residents on Cahill. A welcoming visit will be made.
G. SEMCA picnic - Sunday Sept. 13, 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. (rain date Sunday Sept. 20)
1. Food will be potluck. Residents will be asked to bring their own table service.
2. Shafarman and Siegmann will get the containers for water and lemonade. Hunt has the lemonade. Cups will be provided if needed.
3. Flyer will be distributed the weekend of Aug. 29/30.
4. An E.L. fire truck will come between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m.
VIII. New Business
A. Membership meeting - Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009
1. Agenda items: park name; Community Police officer, Hunt will invite; City/University Liaison, Hunt will invite; Board member election, Szlachteka volunteered to be on the slate. Other Board members were encouraged to seek other names for possible Board positions.
2. Szlachetka and Amundsen will buy the cider & donuts.
3. Amundsen will reserve room at Edgewood Church.
B. Ice cream social Review
1. The ice cream social on Sat. July 25th in the park was attended by about 80 residents. Julie Rojewski wrote a 200 word essay on “Why my neighborhood deserves an ice cream social.” Her essay won enough ice cream for 100 people from Edy’s Ice Cream Co.
2. Discussion whether SEMCA should repeat another ice cream social was tabled and will be on the Nov. 1 agenda.

B. Review 2008/09 Goals
1. Schuesler will contact Dave Smith, E.L. environmental specialist, for an update on Burcham Park for the Oct. 11 membership meeting.
2. Process to welcome new neighbors by the Board is in place. In May Hunt and Schuesler visited a new resident on Mt. Vernon.
C. Website update
1. Hunt worked with webmaster LeRoy Harvey deleting outdated items on SEMCA’s website. Harvey is also agreeable to work with someone else who could take over as webmaster. Hunt will ask Gene Kales if he is interested.
2. Shafarman will ask Dave Anderson if he is interested in helping with the newsletter and website.
D. Neighborhood Watch revival
Consensus of the Board is that there is no interest in getting a revival of Neighborhood Watch.
E. Next Board meeting 11/1/09 - Amundsen’s home, 1729 Melrose
Agenda items: picnic review, membership meeting review, social event in the summer, winter newsletter, election of Board officers.
