Tri-County Compete
Streets Dec 14, 2006
Meeting
Summary (draft by LeRoy)
Next meeting 2/15 at ANC 10am
Updates:
·
John
is still working on the brochure. If anyone wants to help. Perhaps this could
be combined with Smart Commute and or MTFWB.
·
On
that note, Smart Commute Week planning is underway. It will be two weeks this
year. The brochure will evolve based on the focus of the group.
Lyndon Babcock
Recognized!
Lyndon is
featured in the month’s MI Bicyclist available on-line at
www.lmb.org for his achievement in founding Chicagoland Bicycle
Federation. Lyndon has ridden has bike to 24 local units of government in
Ingham County.
MDOT 2030 Vision Meeting
John reported on the MDOT mtg. that he and Lyndon attended. MDOT has expressed interest in light rail, land use. There is a lot of rail traffic between Chicago and Canada. John’s vision is light rail down the highway down the right-of-way. Lyndon feels this could be handled by bus. The only real controversy came from the disabled community. MDOT also feels that technology will play a big role in the future. John feels that they should outreach to the younger population. How do we provide input to the plan? JL mentions the opportunity to comment at www.michigan.gov/slrp 800-341-1828
Mayor’s Task Force on Walking and Biking
This looks like it's going to have really good regional representation. See the update at www.re-news.net/mocth (Jan 17) or go directly to http://www.re-news.net/mocth/up/walkbike2.htm Top 5 priorities:
1. INVENTORY AND PLAN
2. ZONING AND MASTER PLAN CHANGES
3. MARKETING AND MEDIA CAMPAIGNS
4. BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN SAFTEY EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS.
5. COMPLETE STREETS RESOLUTION
JL suggests that for now, people can channel comments to Andy, Jessica, or the Mayor’s office.
Evolution of TCCS
There is some overlap but JL felt that our group might still have an impact on other local units of government. In general, people felt we could stay connected via e-mail and meet less frequently. We could also do "e-mail alerts" People see "complete streets" as a regional issue and feel that there’s an opportunity to talk to the two Mayor’s about linking the two groups. Chicagoland was regional effort. Perhaps the Mayor’s task force should also be regional? Tim Potter could be a great ally to help link with the students.
More Updates
● Allen and LMB are developing an invisible cyclist training program. This will address the biking families. JL described a cookbook that helps people teach the classes – A draft might be available in early January.
● Dick Janson from Tri-County Bicycle Association is developing a “touring book” that is much more regional. He’s including camping, food, bike storage ideas. DJ is the new President and he wants to do more education and advocacy. DJ also came out to the Bike Jam.
● We need a person from TCBA to be on the committee. Dick may be a good person to be on the list. While the group is DALMAC focused, there may be interest.
● LB suggests that a website might be easier to navigate with color, navigation bars, etc. LeRoy subsequently made some changes… see www.re-news.net/mocth
